Very Berry
By Julia A. Keirns

When someone mentions “berries” what comes to your mind?

Do you think of blackberries, dewberries, raspberries or strawberries?

What’s a dewberry?

But these are not “true berries” at all.

The word “berry” refers to a small, simple fruit, and “true berries” possess several seeds throughout the inside fleshy part of the fruit, or pulp. Blueberries and gooseberries are true berries.

What’s a gooseberry?

But blackberries, dewberries, raspberries and strawberries are not.

These fruits have a lot of small, individual fruits and seeds attached to the outside skin, or exocarp, instead.

Some “true berries” are not even small at all.

Look at the list below of ten common “true berries” which you might eat everyday.

Canteloupe
Cucumber
Gourd
Grape
Grapefruit
Lemon
Melon
Orange
Pumpkin
Tomato

Wow, that is quite a list.

So, the next time someone asks you what you want on your salad, tell them you want some “berries” on it, (tomatoes and cucumbers) “true berries” that is.

I bet that will surprise them!
