The Litter Bugs
By Julia A. Keirns

“Litter, litter! Yum, yum!”

Karen Cockroach ran toward a crumpled paper bag of leftover food.

“There’s more over here!” hollered her sister Kathy, rushing toward toward a tipped over trash can.

A family of ants marched toward an empty plastic soda-pop bottle lying nearby.

“Tonight we feast!” they shouted.

“Halt!” Father Ant commanded. The ants stopped. Karen and Kathy Cockroach stopped. All the litter bugs stopped.

Thud! Thump! Boom! Boom!

“They’re here already!” shouted Father Ant. “Hurry! Run! Hide!”

“Everyday it’s the same thing,” complained Karen Cockroach. “We wait all day for someone to litter. We rush to get there before someone picks it up. Then, when we’re just about to feast, someone comes along and snatches it all away. We’re going to starve to death!”

“Oh, don’t be so dramatic,” said her sister Kathy. “Look over there. More litter!”

“Yum, yum,” said Karen. “Hurry! Let’s get over there quick!”

(After thought – Littering is bad for the environment. It is actually a crime. Do your part. Please put litter in its place.)
