The Big Help – Jeremy Cools the World
By Julia A. Keirns

Jeremy Johnson learned about global warming in school. The hole in the ozone layer was allowing more of the sun’s heat through to the earth. The sun’s hot rays were causing the earth’s temperature to rise. Jeremy did not want the earth to get a temperature. He wanted to cool the world.

“Think cool,” he thought to himself. “Think cool.”

“I know! Ice cubes!” he said.

Jeremy took all the ice cubes out of the freezer, and tray by tray he dumped them in the yard. Some by the oak tree, some by the fence, and some by the mailbox. He continued dumping ice cubes in the yard until there were no more ice cubes left in the freezer. But it didn’t work. By the time he was finished the ice cubes were already melting. He checked the thermometer on the garage.

“92 degrees!” he said. “It’s getting hotter, not cooler.”

“I must think cool,” he thought again to himself. “I know!” he shouted out loud. “Fans and air conditioners!”

There were three window air conditioners in the house. He turned them all on high and opened all the windows and doors. Then he turned all the fans on high and faced them toward the door so they could blow all the cold air outside.

Jeremy checked the thermometer on the garage again. This time it said 88 degrees! It was working. The earth’s temperature was coming down.

Soon it got late and Jeremy had to go inside for supper. After supper it was time for bed, but first he checked the thermometer on the garage one more time. He could see it from the big picture window in the living room. 65 degrees!

            Jeremy felt like a hero.

            He had cooled the world.
