Poetry

My Son
By Julia A. Keirns

(This poem was written in the 80’s when my best friend’s brother was killed in a car accident and I just couldn’t get over how their mother would be able to handle it. I wrote this poem thinking of her.)

I see the flowers on my nightstand
His picture is on the wall.
His car sits in the driveway
His friends still call.
Why did you take him away from me
Why did I let him go?
How could it have happened
Why must it be so?
So many words unsaid
So many things undone.
He was my pride and joy
My one and only son.
I just don’t understand
I can only ask why.
Why did you take my son?
Why did he have to die?
