Gone On An Adventure
A review of The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
By Julia A. Keirns
If you like exciting fantasy adventures, you will love this book as much as I did. Published in 1937, Tolkien had the greatest imagination. He created one of the most famous fantasy worlds ever – Middle Earth.
According to the internet, it is the fourth best-selling book of all time. The Hobbit is a book that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. It is a very easy read, not too detailed or complicated, and kept me engrossed all the way through it. The writing is exceptional, and the story is wonderful.
Gandolf, the Wizard, convinces Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit, to go on an adventure with dwarves to save their mountain city from Smaug, the dragon, and get their treasure back, and along the way Baggins meets a creature named Gollum and finds a magic ring. That sentence alone contains enough adventure to last a lifetime. How many of us live our simple uncomplicated lives and dream of going on adventurous journeys? I know I do. This book literally transports readers into a wonderful, believable world of dwarves, elves, trolls, eagles and dragons and takes them on an unforgettable journey with Bilbo. I absolutely love these kind of fantasy stories and I absolutely love this book.
Bilbo chooses to step out of his comfort zone and help others that he doesn’t even know. He feels bad in the beginning for not helping them and his conscious gets the better of him and makes him go along, even knowing it could be quite dangerous. I believe he just trusts that everything will work out okay, and helping others is just what he has to do. There are some great morals in this book if you pay attention.
The Hobbit is a great read for the older child, but this is one of those books that every parent should read to their child, as a great project to read one chapter every night together for 19 nights. A prelude to The Lord of the Rings, this is one classic book that makes the top 100 list almost every time. If you have never read this book, please do.
