Olympic National Park – Day 2
Lake Crescent and Elwha Valley
Driving on Highway 101 west of Port Angeles, Washington you will enter the breathtaking world of Lake Crescent. As the highway curves along the edges of the serene and mostly calm waters of the deep blue lake you will find yourself mesmerized by the beautiful water.
There are many pull-offs to stop and take pictures. The lake is located entirely in the national park but it is not required to pay to drive by it on the highway. It is stated that this lake was formed during the last ice age by glaciers. It is also thought that the name came from the crescent shape of the lake. On Highway 101 you pass by this lake on the way to Forks.
We have driven by this lake three times now on different excursions and its beauty never gets old.
Elwha Valley was closed the day we chose to drive down that entrance and we were told it would not be open soon enough for us to drive all the way due to road washout. But we did see several black-tailed deer on the way.
The Elwha River is 45 miles long and flows north to the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
The Elwha area remains closed to vehicle traffic until further notice. For now the only access is by bicycle, horseback, or hiking on foot.
The black-tailed deer is common in the Pacific Northwest. Their tale is oblong and has a white tip and underside. They are different than the white-tailed deer we are used to seeing in Ohio.
I believe we will make one more trek to Olympic National Forest at the Hoh Rainforest Entrance so stay tuned.
The next post is titled Port of Allyn – Allyn Waterfront Park.

Rich and I have done a lot of traveling in our lives. I wish I would have always written about each adventure, but sometimes life just gets too busy. We began full time RVing in April 2022, but I didn’t start writing about it regularly until December 2022. That’s when I started blogging regularly on Medium. Following is a list of the travel articles I have written on Medium.
You are allowed to read three articles per month for free. Or for $4.99 per month you can become a member of Medium through my referral link and read unlimited articles by all the writers on Medium. Membership also gives you the right to like an article by clapping and leaving comments.
